Terry Becker- Future Liberal Candidate In Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge ?

David Murray: I wanted to say thanks for taking the time to do this interview with the Pitt Meadows Today Terry?
Terry Becker: David , it’s my pleasure. It is great to see that Pitt Meadows has it’s own community online newspaper.
DM: Terry, I know your husband John is running for Mayor in Pitt Meadows, Why are you and John so interested in getting involved in politics at the next level?
TB: We get that question quite a bit, We believe that there are lots of issues important to us personally and to the community that make us want to get involved.
DM: You have helped John with his business for many years. Pitt Meadows has a 26 million dollar a year budget that will need strong stewardship. What makes you feel John has the “right stuff” for the job?
TB: John has run his Law business for 31 years. I have been married to John since 1993 and have helped him with his Law firm since that time.
DM: Enough about John. I had some questions for you Terry?
DM: What community did you grow up in?
TB: I grew up just north of Kamloops in the town of Clearwater B.C. I moved to Maple Ridge in 1983.
DM: So you have been a long-time resident of the community?
TB: Yes, John and I moved to Pitt Meadows in 1993 and we have lived here since .
DM: You and John have a daughter?
TB: Yes , Ashley is her name, she is nineteen years old.
DM: I know you work with John at the law firm in Pitt Meadows. Did you have to go to school for the position you have currently with the company?
TB: I attended Capilano College and then went to B.C.I.T to get my Legal Assistant Diploma .
DM: You tried to get the nomination for the B.C. Liberal party in this riding in 2009, but it went to Ken Stewart?
TB: That is correct. Ken lost to Michael Sather of the NDP by just a little over 200 votes I believe.
DM: With Michael Sather retiring, do you feel if you get the nomination you will have a good chance to win?
TB: You never know, I was disappointed when I didn’t get the nod for the nomination last time.
DM: You are a fighter Terry. I heard you had a battle with cancer ?
TB: Yes, that is correct, I am a survivor for over four years now.
DM: Sandy Wakeling worked on Christy Clark’s provincial leadership campaign, what role did you have in her campaign?
TB: I was in charge of the local Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge campaign for Christy.
DM: How do you feel , being a woman that the NDP has a lot more women candidates at the provincial level than the B.C. Liberals.
TB: I don’t know, We have a women leader, a women president. The NDP has Adrian and Moe.
DM: There is going to be a new candidate coming forward from the NDP in this riding, how do you feel about that?
TB: To tell you the truth, no matter who comes out as their candidate , I have the utmost respect for anyone who puts their name forward to make a difference.
DM: If you are nominated and win this riding , what are some of the things you would like to see happen in the Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge riding?

I would like to see more business come to our riding. Businesses that would provide family-sustaining jobs which could allow people to afford to live and work in our own community. I would make sure that this would not come at any risk to the ALR and would ensure we would have a sustainable community without comprising what makes Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge a great place to live!

DM: So I guess that means you do not want a Walmart in our community?
TB: Personally, I do not shop at Walmart. I believe that this kind of business does not help our community.
I want to try and do everything I can to help promote and protect the existing businesses in our community.
DM: Terry, I wish you and John the best in both of your political ventures! It is not too often you get a husband and wife team that cares enough about the community to roll up their sleeves and really get involved!
TB: Thanks David. It is going to be an interesting few months coming up , that’s for sure.
