Those who suffer from depression may not be surprised by recent news that researchers at the University of Iowa have discovered a possible connection between salt and depression.

According to a report in the Vancouver Sun, Saturday, Mar. 14, Psychologist Alan Kim Johnson and colleagues found that when rats are deficient in salt they will shy away from activities they normally enjoy.

salt“Things that normally would be pleasurable for rats didn’t elicit the same degree of relish, which, which leads us to believe that a salt deficit and the craving associated with it can induce one of the key symptoms associated with depression,” Johnson is quoted as having said.

There have been reports that milk is a natural remedy for depression. Milk has been described as, “nature’s perfect food because it provides fat-soluble vitamins, minerals, valuable enzymes, saturated fat and cholesterol, and many, many other components that are crucial to our general health, but which definitely support brain health and mood stabilization.”
