By Mike Archer. I found out about the Smits family of Chilliwack thanks to an article by Jennifer Feinberg in the Chilliwack Progress, and I must thank her for introducing me and my family to a new delicacy.

For cheese lovers, the drive to the Smits family farm is very much worth it, especially on a sunny autumn afternoon. If you exit Highway at Lickman Road and drive south a few miles you’ll find it.

A nicer drive from the west would take you along Zero Avenue through Langley and Abbotsford, up on to Vye Road and across to Chilliwack.

Take Interprovincial Hwy north to No. 3 Road east. A quick left (N) onto Boundary Rd will let you cross the Vedder Canal and join up with Keith Wilson Rd in Chilliwack.

From there just drive a couple of miles to Lickman Rd and turn left (N).

The fall colours and the pastoral scenery are a nice introduction to the Smits family spread.

The shop is up the driveway, under the old Oak tree and beyond the ‘Slow Horse, blind dogs and unruly kids’ sign. Inside a nice selection of gouda cheeses awaits for sampling as a small array of condiments, and other snacks for sale.

We especially enjoyed the Grilled Eggplant rolled with provolone and sundried tomatoes.

Besides the standard gouda cheeses you’ll find something called fenugreek as well as Italian, stinging nettle, garlic and chili flavoured gouda.

Stephanie and her husband Ron (the cheesemaker)have had the farm store open now for just two months and business has been brisk with much of their traffic coming from Abbotsford and Langley.

Ron’s Mom, Francine Smits, who was minding the store when we visited, knows her gouda and it is well worth the time to have her teach you what she knows about the various kinds made at the farm. She’ll pull you a sample of each to help you decide so playing dumb is a good idea.

In fact, saying you’ve never heard of cheese at all is a perfect way to start your visit.

They’re only open Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. so next weekend set aside the time fro a drive in the country, come sip a nice cup of coffee and learn everything you ever wanted to know about gouda.

Remember … you know nothing 😉
