Business Feature: Bear Image Productions

By Mike Archer. When you first meet Sandra Bonner-Pederson her infectious drive just sort of makes you want to get up and do something. It’s a time-is-a-wasting, let’s-get-going kind of feeling.

Scene from Fire Story

Her sense of humour will probably hit you next as it becomes more and more clear that, what it is she does, you want to work with her and it’s going to be fun.

What she does is make magic happen behind a video camera. Television production, corporate videos, documentaries … just about anything that needs saying with a video camera … that’s what Sandra does.

Perhaps best known for a series of short local documentaries that has appeared on Shaw Cable called Bear Tracks, which provided an informative and entertaining look at several pieces of Stó:lō cultural history including:

  • Carving
  • Fire Story
  • Gathering Cedar
  • Story Telling

While one of her passions is telling the story of the Tzeachten and other Stó:lō people, Bear Image Productions has developed expertise in a wide variety of video formats.

In addition to the Bear Tracks series, Bear Image Productions has a full library of promotional, documentary and informational videos and a team of skilled local talent on both sides of the camera.

About Bear Image Productions

The Bear Image Productions logo symbolizes the proprietor’s cultural link to the Bear Clan and the People of the River (Sto:lo Nation). Bear Image Productions is 100% Aboriginal owned and will try to provide employment to First Nations people.

The equipment is housed in a studio building attached to my home on Tzeachten First Nation. This studio comes equipped with 2 Avid Xpress Pro 5.7 Edit Suites, an open area to set up for interviews etc. and also has a high quality television with surround sound to view your finished product.

The Owner – In Her Own Words

Sandra Bonner-Pederson on location

I, Sandra Bonner-Pederson, am a member of the Tzeachten First Nation and a 1994 graduate of the Television Broadcasting course at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. I have been in the television industry since 1989. My first role in the industry was a volunteer host for a Chilliwack community program entitled “Rebirth of a Nation.” This half hour program dealt with various issues of our First Nation people; from First Nation artist to victims of Residential Schools.

I was raised off the Tzeachten Reserve and had no concept of my cultural background. This program brought me back to my heritage and opened my eyes to see the beauty, talents and strengths of our First Nations people.I know the importance of not only our people, but all people, sharing their strengths and telling their stories to others. This is why I chose the Television Industry to one day archive our people’s cultural traditions in video, as well as all other important moments in life.

A goal that I had hope to one day achieve, came to light in 2006, when Shaw Cable gave us air time to produce a First Nation program. The program is entitled “Bear Tracks” and it highlights stories, traditions, cultural artwork etc. of the Stó:lō People. Stó:lō is a Halq’emeylem word meaning river. Please contact Shaw Cable in Chilliwack for viewing times.

I have an extensive background in video production and have the ability to take on the roles of Producer, Director, Writer, Camera Operator, and Editor. We have 2 P2 cameras, and I also house 2 Edit Suites (Avid Xpress Pro 5.7).
